Antarctic Ozone Hole Fifth-Smallest Since 1992
On 24th November 2025, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, US) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, US) reported that the Antarctic ozone hole was the fifth-smallest since 1992, signalling steady atmospheric recovery.
Findings
- Average ozone hole area (7 Sept-13 Oct): 7.23 million sq miles, twice the size of the contiguous US.
- Maximum single-day extent (9 Sept): 8.83 million sq miles, about 30% smaller than the largest ever recorded.
- Ozone-depleting substances in the Antarctic stratosphere have declined by one-third since 2000.
- Ozone holes now form later and break up earlier than in the early 2000s.
