Two New Lichen Moth Species Discovered in Himalayas
Recently, the Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered two new species of lichen moths in the Himalayas, marking a significant addition to India’s biodiversity.
- The findings were published on 2 March 2026 in the international taxonomic journal Zootaxa.
What are the Newly Discovered Species?
- Caulocera hollowayi - discovered in Sikkim (Golitar region).
- Asura buxa - discovered in West Bengal (Panijhora region).
- Both belong to the Lepidoptera order (moths and butterflies).
What are Lichen Moths?
- Moths whose caterpillars feed exclusively on lichens.
- Lichens are a symbiotic association of fungi and algae.
- Found as patches on rocks, tree bark and old walls.
