Maldives Becomes First Country to Enact Generational Tobacco Ban
On 1st November 2025, Maldives became the first country in the world to introduce a nationwide generational ban on tobacco use, prohibiting the sale and consumption of tobacco products by anyone born after 1st January 2007, including tourists.
- The ban, enacted through the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act and ratified by President Mohamed Muizzu, marks a historic step toward creating a smoke-free generation in the island nation of just over half a million people.
- It aligns with obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and aims to protect future generations from tobacco-related harm.
