Gaddi Dog Breed Recognized by ICAR-NBAGR
On 6th January 2025, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR) officially recognized ‘Gaddi’, a native Himalayan dog breed, alongside nine other livestock breeds.
- Despite its historical and cultural significance, the Gaddi breed is not recognized by any major kennel club, making its recognition by ICAR-NBAGR crucial for its preservation.
- The Gaddi breed's population has dwindled to under 1,000 due to the decline of the nomadic lifestyle that once helped maintain the breed's numbers, putting it at risk of extinction.
