New Genus and Species of Microscopic Crustacean Discovered
In January 2026, scientists confirmed the discovery of a new genus and species of microscopic crustacean from the Kavaratti lagoon in the Lakshadweep islands, marking a significant addition to India’s marine biodiversity.
- The organism, named Indiaphonte bijoyi, belongs to the Laophontidae family of the Copepoda class.
- The genus name honours India, while the species name recognises S. Bijoy Nandan, Dean, Faculty of Marine Sciences, Cochin University of Science and Technology.
- Indiaphonte bijoyi has a semi-cylindrical, depressed body with tapering ends and antenna-like appendages; females measure 518-772 micrometres, slightly larger than males (508-756 micrometres).
