New Genus and Species of Microscopic Crustacean Discovered

In January 2026, scientists confirmed the discovery of a new genus and species of microscopic crustacean from the Kavaratti lagoon in the Lakshadweep islands, marking a significant addition to India’s marine biodiversity.

  • The organism, named Indiaphonte bijoyi, belongs to the Laophontidae family of the Copepoda class.
  • The genus name honours India, while the species name recognises S. Bijoy Nandan, Dean, Faculty of Marine Sciences, Cochin University of Science and Technology.
