Grey Rhino Event
- On 13th September 2025, the report “Sliding Earth, Scattered Lives” highlighted the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides as a ‘grey rhino event’.
- A grey rhino event refers to a highly probable, high-impact disaster that is often ignored despite visible warning signs.
- The study found that the landslides occurred in an already classified landslide-prone zone of the Western Ghats, worsened by excessive human interference, unchecked development, and environmental degradation.
- Key recommendations include strict adherence to environmental regulations in development projects, community participation in planning, and relocation of settlements from landslide pathways to reduce vulnerability.
