Centre Relaxes Rules on Sulphur Dioxide Emission Controls in TPP

On 12th July 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) issued a notification, significantly relaxing the rules for installing flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems in India’s thermal power plants (TPPs).

  • The new policy exempts nearly 78% of all TPP units from installing FGD technology, potentially impacting air quality and public health.

What are Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) Systems?

  • FGDs are pollution control technologies designed to remove sulphur dioxide (SO₂) from flue gases produced by coal-based thermal power plants.
