NATO Summit 2025

On 25th June 2025, at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) summit held in The Hague, the Netherlands, US President dominated discussions and claimed a major policy win as NATO members agreed to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP — a sharp rise from the previous 2% goal.

What was decided at the Summit?

  • The 5% Defence Spending Target: NATO members agreed to spend 5% of GDP on defence.
    • 3.5%: Direct military spending
    • 1.5%: Broader defence-related costs (e.g., infrastructure, cybersecurity, R&D)
  • Countries must submit annual plans and show incremental progress, with a major review due after the 2029 US election.
