Iran Declared in Breach of Non-Proliferation Obligations
On 20th June 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s 35-nation Board of Governors formally declared Iran in non-compliance with its nuclear safeguards obligations — the first such declaration since 2005.
- The resolution, passed with support from the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, cites Iran’s failure to provide credible explanations for uranium traces at undeclared nuclear sites, violating the terms of its Safeguards Agreement.
- A damning IAEA report released on 31st May revealed that three of four investigated sites were part of a previously undeclared structured nuclear programme, active until the early 2000s and involving undeclared nuclear materials.
