Global Study on Economic Costs of Invasive Species
In August 2025, an international team of researchers found that damage caused by non-native plants and animals has cost society more than $2.2 trillion worldwide since 1960, with impacts far greater than previously estimated.
What are Invasive Alien Species (IAS)?
- Invasive Alien Species (IAS) are non-native organisms such as plants, animals, fungi, or microbes introduced beyond their natural range, where they establish self-sustaining populations.
- They compete with native species, alter ecosystems, and cause ecological, economic, and social harm.
- Under India’s Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, IAS are defined as non-native species that threaten wildlife or habitats.
