Gangotri Glacier Study: Climate Change Impact on Ganga’s Lifeline
A recent study, titled” Hydrological contributions of snow and glacier melt from the Gangotri glacier system and their climatic controls since 1980” revealed major climate change-driven shifts in the Gangotri Glacier System (GGS), the central Himalayan glacier feeding the Ganga river.
Findings of the Study
- Using satellite and ground data (1980–2020), researchers found that rising temperatures have reduced snow formation, altering the hydrology of the glacier system.
- Snowmelt still dominates the flow pattern (64%), followed by glacier melt (21%), rainfall-runoff (11%), and base flow (4%).
- Snowmelt’s share has declined from 73% in the 1980s to 63% in the 2010s, showing clear climate ....
