Saltwater Crocodile Population Rises in Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve
On 18th August 2025, the West Bengal Forest Department released a report, titled “Population Assessment and Habitat Ecology Study of Saltwater Crocodiles in Sundarbans 2025”, noting an increase in crocodile numbers compared to 2024.
- The estimated population in the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve (SBR) is 220–242, with 213 direct sightings this year, up from last year’s estimate of 204–234.
- The survey, covering 1,168 km of creeks (64% of key creek length), found that crocodiles prefer creeks and rivers with high tide widths under 180 metres, and they tolerate wide salinity ranges in winter.
