Tropical Deforestation 2025: The Hidden Toll of Heat
On 27th August 2025, a study, titled “Tropical deforestation is associated with considerable heat-related mortality” highlighted the lethal impact of tropical deforestation on human health, revealing that deforestation-induced warming caused an estimated 28,300 additional deaths per year in tropical regions between 2001 and 2020.
What does the study reveal?
- Tropical deforestation caused local temperatures in deforested areas to rise by an average of 0.7°C between 2001 and 2020, compared to just 0.2°C in areas that maintained forest cover.
- Southeast Asia was the worst-affected region, with 8–11 deaths per 100,000 people living in deforested areas.
