China Begins Construction of World’s Largest Dam on Brahmaputra
On 19th July 2025, China began constructing a $167.8 billion mega dam on the Yarlung Zangbo (also known as Yarlung Tsangpo; Brahmaputra in India) river near the “Great Bend” in Medog county, close to Arunachal Pradesh.
- With a capacity of 60,000 MW, the dam is set to become the world’s largest hydroelectric project, surpassing the Three Gorges Dam.
Key Concerns Raised by India
- Threat to Arunachal Pradesh: The dam is seen as an existential threat by Arunachal CM, who warned it could act as a “water bomb” if China weaponises it. Sudden water releases could devastate the Siang belt, home to ....
