Russia Formally Recognises Taliban Government in Afghanistan
On 3rd July 2025, Russia’s Ambassador to Kabul informed Taliban Acting Foreign Minister that Russia had formally recognised the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
- Russia’s move follows its April 2025 Supreme Court ruling that removed the Taliban from its list of terrorist organisations, paving the way for formal diplomatic ties.
- The decision comes against the backdrop of Russia’s strategic re-engagement in the region through initiatives like the Moscow Format Consultations, concern over ISIS-K, and growing bilateral trade worth $1 billion in 2024—projected to triple in 2025.
