Russia Formally Recognises Taliban Government in Afghanistan

On 3rd July 2025, Russia’s Ambassador to Kabul informed Taliban Acting Foreign Minister that Russia had formally recognised the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.

  • Russia’s move follows its April 2025 Supreme Court ruling that removed the Taliban from its list of terrorist organisations, paving the way for formal diplomatic ties.
