Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel ‘Samudra Prachet’

On 23rd July 2025, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched Samudra Prachet, the second and final indigenous Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), marking a major step towards maritime environmental protection and self-reliance.

What are Pollution Control Vessels (PCVs)?

PCVs are specialized ships equipped to contain and clean up oil spills in maritime zones. These vessels play a crucial role in:

  • Responding rapidly to marine oil spills;
  • Protecting coastal and marine ecosystems; and
  • Ensuring environmental safety within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
