Senegal Declared Free of Trachoma by WHO
On 15th July 2025, Senegal was officially validated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem — becoming the 25th country globally and the 9th in Africa to reach this milestone.
Why is this significant?
- Africa bears the highest burden of trachoma, particularly in rural and impoverished regions.
- Senegal has struggled with trachoma for over a century, with major public health surveys identifying it as a national concern since the 1980s.
