Vera C Rubin Observatory

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, located atop Cerro Pachón Mountain in Chile at an altitude of 8,684 feet, released its first test images.

  • These images were captured using its primary instrument—the Simonyi Survey Telescope.
  • The telescope is the world’s fastest-slewing, repositioning in just five seconds, enabling a full-sky scan every three nights without pre-selecting targets — a major leap from traditional telescope planning.
  • Once fully operational by year-end, Rubin will process 20 terabytes of data per night and is expected to discover 5 million+ asteroids and ~100,000 near-Earth ....
