Raj Bhavan Renamed as “Lok Bhavan”

  • On 1st December 2025, Uttarakhand renamed the Raj Bhavan (Governor’s residence) in Dehradun and Nainital as “Lok Bhavan,” with immediate effect.
  • The renaming followed an advisory issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 25 November to all states and Union Territories.
  • The advisory suggested replacing colonial-era terms such as “Raj Bhavan” with “Lok Bhavan” and “Raj Niwas” with “Lok Niwas.”
  • The decision aligns with the Union Government’s proposal to discard colonial nomenclature.
  • West Bengal was the first state to formally implement this change.
