Operation Olivia – Marine Conservation Milestone
- ‘Operation Olivia’ is the Indian Coast Guard’s annual mission conducted from November to May to protect the endangered Olive Ridley turtles along Odisha’s coastline.
- In February 2025, over 6.98 lakh turtles nested at the Rushikulya river mouth, setting a new record for mass nesting.
- The operation focuses on key nesting sites like Gahirmatha Beach and nearby coastal areas that witness over 8 lakh turtle arrivals annually.
- ICG has conducted 5,387 surface patrol sorties and 1,768 aerial surveillance missions since the operation’s inception.
- Operation Olivia promotes conservation through community outreach—encouraging the use of Turtle Excluder Devices and partnering with NGOs for sustainable fishing ....
