World’s First Commercial-Scale E-Methanol Plant

On 21st May 2025, the world’s first commercial-scale e-methanol plant began operations in Kasso, southern Denmark.

  • The plant, developed by Denmark’s European Energy in partnership with Japan’s Mitsui, will produce renewable, low-emission e-methanol to help the shipping industry cut carbon emissions.

Key Features of the E-Methanol Plant

  • Annual production capacity is 42,000 metric tons (53 million litres) of e-methanol.
  • E-methanol is made using renewable energy combined with CO2 captured from biogas plants and waste incineration.
  • The plant uses green technology to produce fuel with zero carbon emissions.
  • Excess heat generated is used to provide heating for 3,300 local households.
