Blood Test for Cervical Cancer Monitoring

Recently, Doctors from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, have pioneered research that suggests a simple blood test could help determine whether cervical cancer is responding to treatment or if it has relapsed.

  • The test detects DNA fragments from the human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for most cervical cancer cases.

What is HPV DNA Testing?

  • HPV DNA: The presence of circulating HPV DNA fragments in the blood can indicate the size of the tumour.
  • Sensitive Test: A molecular test detects trace amounts of DNA from the most common high-risk strains of HPV—HPV16 and HPV18.
