New Material for Efficient Water Desalination
In April 2025, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay unveiled a breakthrough in water desalination with the development of the Dual-Sided Superhydrophobic Laser-Induced Graphene (DSLIG) evaporator, which addresses key challenges in existing desalination methods.
What is the DSLIG Evaporator?
- A novel material designed for solar and electric heating to enhance water desalination efficiency.
- Utilizes laser-engraved graphene on a polymer layer for superhydrophobic properties, reducing salt deposition.
- Combines solar and Joule heating, ensuring consistent performance despite fluctuations in sunlight
- Ideal for desalination of seawater, brackish water, and industrial wastewater, including concentrated salt solutions.
