Brain-Computer Interface to Restore Natural Speech
Recently, researchers developed a breakthrough brain-computer interface (BCI) that restores naturalistic speech for people with severe paralysis.
- The BCI uses artificial intelligence to instantly translate brain signals into audible speech, enabling near-synchronous voice streaming that sounds natural.
- The system samples neural data from the motor cortex (which controls speech) and decodes it using AI, similar to how voice assistants like Alexa and Siri process speech.
- The AI model powering the speech was trained to replicate Ann’s pre-injury voice, offering personalized and realistic communication.
- Unlike previous BCI models that had an 8-second delay for sentence generation, this new method offers near real-time translation of thoughts ....
