India’s First Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor Set for Commissioning in 2025
Recently, the Department of Atomic Energy informed the parliamentary standing committee on science and technology that India’s prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR), located in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, is expected to be commissioned in 2025–26, marking a major milestone in the country’s three-stage nuclear energy programme.
- The PFBR aims to recycle spent fuel to reduce radioactive waste, moving India into the second stage of its nuclear power roadmap.
- The 500 MW reactor will use plutonium-based mixed oxide fuel and liquid sodium as a coolant, a first-of-its-kind configuration in the country.
