Neuralink to Implant 'Blindsight' Chip in First Human by 2025
Recently, Elon Musk announced that his neurotechnology company - Neuralink - plans to implant its artificial visual prosthesis, Blindsight, in a human for the first time by the end of this year.
- The experimental device aims to partially restore vision in blind individuals through a brain chip embedded in the visual cortex.
- The Blindsight device has received the US FDA’s ‘breakthrough device’ status in September 2024, allowing for accelerated development and review.
- It consists of a microelectrode array implanted in the brain’s visual cortex, designed to stimulate neurons based on input from an external camera.
