Describe the meaning of the term "western disturbances" and how they affect the weather systems in India.
Answer: The western cyclonic disturbances which enter the Indian subcontinent from the west and the northwest during the winter months, originate over the Mediterranean Sea and are brought into India by the westerly jet stream. An increase in the prevailing night temperature generally indicates an advance in the arrival of these cyclones disturbances
Impact of western disturbances on the Indian weather systems:
- Western disturbances cause 5-10% of India's annual rainfall. They cause most winter and pre-monsoon rainfall in NW India.
