The Central Government has recently revoked AFSPA from parts of North East. Critically weigh the advantages and disadvantages of revoking the AFSPA from entire North East region of India.
Answer: The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is a Parliamentary act that grants special powers to Indian Armed Forces and state and paramilitary forces in areas classified as “disturbed areas” to maintain law and order.
It has been revoked from parts of Northeast, entirely from 23 districts in Assam; and partially from seven districts in Nagaland, six districts in Manipur, and one district in Assam.
The advantages of revoking the AFSPA from entire North East region of India:

- Provides safeguards for preventive and punitive detentions
- Protects fundamental rights of people
