Answer: The Green Revolution of 1960s encompassing the use of HYV Seeds, assured irrigation, chemical fertilizers, etc. led to the enormous rise in food production, productivity and income of large landholders. However, it was accompanied by deforestation, decline in biodiversity, land degradation and inequalities between farmers and regions.
This has created a need to modernise Indian agriculture on the lines of Agriculture Green Revolution 2.0 comprising following components-
- Bio-fertilisers instead of chemical inputs
- Eco-friendly agriculture techniques like Agro forestry, mulching, precision farming, SRI, crop rotation, etc.
- Use of biotechnology and breeding practises
- Replacing mono cropping with crop diversification
