Explain India’s approach in dealing with recent political developments in Myanmar. How will these developments in Myanmar affect India’s national interests in the North Eastern region?
Answer: On February 1, 2021, the democratically elected government of Myanmar was not allowed to swear in and a military coup took over Myanmar.The UNSG and others condemned the takeover; the US, UK and EU all imposed sanctions on the junta but India has taken a more measured and cautious approach.
India, following policy of non-interference, has clearly expressed its “support” to the “democratic transition” and re-establishing rule of law in Myanmar. However, India has avoided criticizing the military.
