Blue Dragons Appear in Spanish Beaches
In early September 2025, several beaches in Spain were closed after an unusual number of blue dragons washed ashore, surprising locals and scientists alike.
What are blue dragons?
- Blue dragons (Glaucus atlanticus) are small sea slugs, about four centimetres long, that float on the ocean surface.
- Unlike other sea slugs, they float upside down, maintaining an air bubble in their stomach to stay buoyant.
- Their blue-and-white coloration provides camouflage: blue on top blends with the ocean surface, while white underneath blends with sunlight from below.
- They feed on jellyfish and venomous siphonophores like the Portuguese man o’ war, storing their prey’s stinging cells ....
