India Adds Two Ramsar Wetlands
Recently, India added two more wetlands in Bihar—Gokul Jalashay (Buxar district) and Udaipur Jheel (West Champaran district)—to the global list of Ramsar sites, bringing India’s total to 93.
- This addition reinforces India’s top position in Asia and third globally after the UK (176) and Mexico (144) in terms of total Ramsar sites, which now cover 13,60,718 hectares across the country.
- Gokul Jalashay, an oxbow lake on the southern edge of the Ganga, acts as a flood buffer for nearby villages and supports over 50 bird species, while local communities rely on it for fishing, farming, and irrigation.
