Dugong Conservation Reserve, Tamil Nadu
Recently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) proposed a Resolution to recognise India’s first Dugong Conservation Reserve in Tamil Nadu’s Palk Bay, to be voted on at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi in October 2025.
- The Dugong Conservation Reserve, covering 448 sq km near Thanjavur district, protects dugongs—India’s largest herbivorous marine mammals, also called ‘sea cows’—whose habitats are threatened by human activity.
- Tamil Nadu has implemented community awareness programs and seagrass restoration projects spanning 8 hectares to safeguard dugongs and their critical seagrass habitats (over 12,000 hectares in Palk Bay).
