Koala Chlamydia Vaccine
A world-first vaccine to protect koalas from chlamydia infections has been approved by Australia’s veterinary medicine regulator, enabling its use in wildlife hospitals, veterinary clinics, and the field.
- The single-dose vaccine, reduces the likelihood of koalas developing symptoms during breeding age and cuts mortality from chlamydia in wild populations by at least 65%.
- Chlamydia causes infertility, blindness, urinary tract infections, and death in koalas, and is responsible for up to 50% of deaths in some wild populations, particularly in southeast Queensland and New South Wales.
