Fossil Fuel Giants Directly Linked to Deadly Heatwaves

On 10th September 2025, a study, titled ‘Systematic attribution of heatwaves to the emissions of carbon majors’, was published. It directly tied hundreds of deadly heatwaves to the carbon emissions of the world’s biggest fossil fuel companies.

What is a heatwave?

  • A heatwave is a prolonged period of abnormally hot weather, often accompanied by high humidity, lasting several days or weeks.
  • Heatwaves in India typically occur between March and June, and in rare cases extend till July.
  • It is caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming, shifts in atmospheric circulation patterns, such as jet streams and Urban Heat Island ....
