Polluted River Stretches in India Show Improvement: CPCB Report
On 22nd September 2025, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) released the “Polluted River Stretches for Restoration of Water Quality” assessment, revealing that 46% of river stretches assessed in 2022 were polluted, showing a significant improvement from previous assessments.
Key Findings
- Polluted Stretches: 279 out of 603 river stretches (46%) were polluted in 2022.
- Improvement over 2015: In 2015, 70% of stretches (275 out of 390) were found polluted.
- Monitoring Locations: Assessment was based on 2,116 locations monitored in 2022–2023, of which 1,299 (62%) complied with pollution criteria such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) ≤ 3 mg/l.
