CERN Discovers New Particle “Xi-cc-plus” at Large Hadron Collider

On 17th March 2026, CERN announced the discovery of a new particle “Xi-cc-plus” at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

  • It is the 80th particle identified by the world’s most powerful particle accelerator.

What is Xi-cc-plus?

  • A type of baryon (particle made of three quarks).
  • Composed of two charm quarks + one down quark.
  • About 4 times heavier than a proton.
  • Extremely short-lived and difficult to detect.

About Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

  • 27-km underground particle accelerator (France-Switzerland).
  • Smashes particles at near light speed.
  • Discovered Higgs boson (2012).
  • Future upgrades include the Future Circular Collider.
