Scientists Detect Magnetic Waves Deep Inside the Sun

A new study by researchers from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and New York University Abu Dhabi has identified possible evidence of subtle magnetic movements deep inside the Sun.

What is Helioseismology?

  • Helioseismology is the study of vibrations and waves on the Sun’s surface.
  • Similar to how earthquakes help scientists study Earth’s interior.
  • Scientists analysed over 5,000 days of data from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).
  • Data came from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument.

Key Discovery

  • Researchers detected two types of faint waves beneath the Sun’s surface.
  • These are believed to be magneto-Rossby waves.
  • Magneto-Rossby waves occur in rotating fluids influenced ....
