Indian Army Expands Pinaka Rocket Artillery Regiments

Recently, the Indian Army has operationalised its 7th Pinaka regiment and is preparing to induct the 8th by end of 2026, enhancing rocket artillery along western and northern borders.

What is the Pinaka System?

  • An indigenously developed multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system.
  • Designed for rapid, high-volume firepower against enemy positions.
  • Developed by DRDO and produced by Indian defence firms.
  • Named after Lord Shiva’s bow “Pinaka”.

Key Features

  • Each regiment has 18 operational launchers (plus reserve units).
  • One battery (6 launchers) can fire 72 rockets in ~44 seconds.
  • Covers an area of about 1,000 × 800 metres in a single salvo.
