NavIC Satellite IRNSS-1F Loses Atomic Clock

On 13th March 2026, Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) announced that the atomic clock onboard navigation satellite IRNSS-1F has stopped functioning.

  • As a result, the satellite can no longer provide positioning data for India’s regional navigation system NavIC.

What is IRNSS/NavIC?

  • IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System), also called NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation).
  • India’s regional satellite navigation system, similar to the US GPS.
  • Designed to provide positioning data over India and about 1,500 km beyond its borders.
  • Provides location accuracy of about 10 metres over the Indian region.
