Suspected Meningococcal Infection

On 26th February 2026, the Meghalaya government issued a public health advisory following suspected meningococcal infection cases at an Army training centre in Shillong.

  • Meningococcal infection is a serious bacterial illness caused by Neisseria meningitidis.
  • It can lead to meningitis (infection of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord) and septicemia (bloodstream infection).
  • The disease can progress rapidly and may become life-threatening if not treated promptly.
  • Surveillance has been intensified in institutions and high-density settings where close contact may increase transmission risk.
