IISc Launches Brain Co-Processors Moonshot Project

On 4th March 2026, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) launched a moonshot project to develop brain co-processors that combine neuromorphic hardware and AI algorithms to restore or enhance brain function.

What are Brain Co-Processors?

  • Devices that decode neural signals from the brain, process them using AI, and send signals back through neural stimulation.
  • Designed to assist or restore lost brain functions.
  • Combine neuromorphic computing, neural recording technologies and artificial intelligence.
  • Can be implantable or non-invasive systems.
  • Neuromorphic computing is a computing approach that mimics the structure and functioning of the human brain, using artificial neurons and synapses.
  • It enables energy-efficient, adaptive and parallel information ....
