Global Coral Reefs Face Thermal Tipping Point

On 13th October 2025, a Global Tipping Points report warned that warm-water coral reefs worldwide have crossed their thermal tipping point, triggering unprecedented dieback and threatening both marine biodiversity and human livelihoods.

What are coral reefs?

  • Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems often called the rainforests of the oceans.”
  • They provide habitat for a quarter of all marine species and support nearly one billion people with food, income, and coastal protection.
  • Reefs are highly sensitive to ocean temperature rise, with a threshold for warm-water corals having already exceeded 1.2°C, causing mass bleaching events.
