India Rises to 9th Position Globally in Total Forest Area: FAO Report

On 21st October 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) 2025, revealing that India’s total forest area ranking improved to ninth from tenth position globally, while it retained its third position in terms of annual forest gain.

Findings of the Report

  • India’s Forest Area: Approximately 72.73 million hectares, representing a steady increase in green cover.
  • Global Forest Rankings: Russia (832.6 million ha), Brazil (486 million ha), Canada (368.8 million ha), the US (308.89 million ha), and China (227.15 million ha) hold the top five positions.
