3D Model Could Improve Forecasting of Solar Eruptions
Recently, scientists have developed a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation model to better understand and forecast Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), including their speed, arrival and potential impact on Earth.
What are Coronal Mass Ejections?
- Solar Eruptions: CMEs are massive eruptions of magnetised plasma from the Sun’s outer atmosphere.
- High Speed: They can travel through space at millions of kilometres per hour.
- Earth Impact: Earth-directed CMEs can disrupt satellites, communication systems and power grids.
- Space Weather: CMEs are an important source of space-weather disturbances.
