Rotating Detonation Engine: A New Leap in Fuel-Efficient Propulsion
Recently, Indian defence start-up D-Propulse successfully demonstrated a Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) at a DRDO facility in Hyderabad, highlighting the potential of detonation-based propulsion for future rockets and hypersonic systems.
What is a Rotating Detonation Engine?
- Detonation-Based Combustion: An RDE uses a supersonic detonation wave instead of the slower flame-based combustion used in conventional engines.
- Continuous Operation: The detonation wave travels continuously around a ring-shaped combustion chamber, allowing the engine to generate sustained thrust.
- Higher Efficiency: RDEs can theoretically offer around 10–25% higher thermodynamic efficiency than conventional combustors.
