Light-Activated Nanobots for Targeted Breast Cancer Therapy

Recently, researchers have developed a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive nanobot that can actively move toward breast cancer cells and destroy them through targeted phototherapy.

What are Nanobots?

  • Tiny nanoscale systems designed to perform specific functions inside biological environments.
  • The new nanobots can:
    • Move directionally under NIR light.
    • Generate heat for photothermal therapy.
    • Produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) for photodynamic therapy.
    • Recognise breast cancer cells using folic acid.

Major Findings

  • Researchers developed upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP)-based nanobots that convert NIR light into heat.
  • Under a 980 nm NIR laser, the nanobots showed phototaxis, moving toward the light source.
