NASA’s ‘Big Bang’ Fix Gives Voyager 2 Another Year in Interstellar Space

Recently, NASA engineers successfully implemented a power-saving upgrade on Voyager 2, allowing its remaining science instruments to continue collecting data from interstellar space for at least another year.

What is the ‘Big Bang’ Fix?

  • Power-Saving Upgrade: Engineers reconfigured Voyager 2’s onboard systems to reduce its electricity consumption.
  • Efficient Systems: Two alternative heaters and another device were activated to provide the required warmth while using less power.
  • Software Update: Voyager 2 was also programmed to keep the newly configured low-power systems active if it enters safe mode.
