IN-SPACe Guidelines for Planned Re-entry of Space Objects

On 30th July 2026, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) released the “Authorisation for Undertaking Planned Re-entry of Space Objects” guidelines, establishing a regulatory framework for companies and government agencies undertaking the controlled return of space objects to Earth.

What is Planned Re-entry?

  • Space Object Re-entry: Objects such as spent rocket stages, inactive satellites and orbital debris can naturally fall back to Earth under gravity.
  • Planned Re-entry: Unlike uncontrolled re-entry, it involves deliberate manoeuvres and/or engine burns to determine when, where and how an object enters the atmosphere.
  • Purpose: Precise control helps minimise risks to people, infrastructure, ....
