IIT Patna Develops Hybrid Magneto-Rheometer for Smart Fluids

Recently, scientists from IIT Patna developed a hybrid magneto-rheometer to study the flow, deformation, friction and wear behaviour of magnetorheological (MR) fluids under different operating conditions.

What are Magnetorheological (MR) Fluids?

  • MR fluids are smart materials whose apparent viscosity changes rapidly when exposed to a magnetic field.
  • In the absence of a magnetic field, they behave like fluids, while a magnetic field can make them behave more like a viscoelastic solid.
  • Their mechanical properties can therefore be controlled using an electromagnet.

The New Hybrid Magneto-Rheometer

  • Scientists prepared nano iron powder-based MR fluids and developed a specialised rheometer to study their behaviour.
  • The device ....
